For those interested in learning more about probability and statistics.
The general goals for the eighth edition remain the same as those in recent editions. Author feel as if it is important to retain a balance between theory and applications. Engineers and physical scientists as well as computer scientists are trained in calculus and thus mathematical support is given when we feel as if the pedagogyis enhanced by it. This approach prohibits the material from becoming a collection of tools with no mathematical roots. Certainly students with a mathematical background of calculus, and, in a few cases, linear algebra, have the capability to understand the concepts more thoroughly and use the resulting tools more intelligently. Otherwise there is a clear danger that, the student will only be able to apply the material within very narrow bounds.
