Scribd doesn’t specifically aim to provide free textbooks but there seem to be many available. Searches for specific titles or subjects often bring back a substantial list of results. Outside of textbooks, Scribd can be used as a deep source of student contributed notes.
Nearly all of the sites above are not in violation of any copyright laws. Scribd is the exception, but only because they allow users to upload materials. However, they seem responsive to DMCA take down notices.

Textbooktorrent
One of my fave is textbooktorrents. Textbook Torrents is using BitTorrent, a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol, to let students download textbooks for free. The site not only allows Torrents for those open textbooks but allows users to scan and upload other textbooks.
The textbooktorrents.com website is currently offline. The error data (”not found on this server”) just confirmed that the owner took it down or that the host (DreamHost) took it down. Please note that Google still has pages from textbooktorrents.com in their index. Google hasn’t banned the site, it’s simply not ranking high because there’s no longer any relevant content on these pages.

Protective Coatings and Paints -03 Corrosion Control by Coatings

Most commonly used method for protecting facilities structure is coating of surfaces. It can be used most effectively in conjunction with other control methods. These include but are not limited to proper design of components, proper selection of materials and components,
cathodic protection, controlling the environment, and use of corrosion inhibitors.

The mechanisms of coating for protecting metals from corrosion is by interfering with one or more of the conditions necessary for corrosion to occur. It can be name as follow:

a) Barrier
Most coatings provide corrosion protection by forming a barrier that is relatively impermeable to moisture and electrolytes (usually salts) necessary for corrosion. No organic coating is completely impermeable, but some are much more so than others. Obviously, the coating film must be thick enough and free of discontinuities (holidays) to achieve maximum barrier protection.

b) Inhibitors
Some pigments are used in primers for metals to inhibit the corrosion reaction at the metal/primer interface. Red lead and zinc chromate pigments, used for this purpose for many years, are seldom used today because of health and environmental concerns. Acceptable alternate corrosion control pigments are available.

c) Cathodic protection
Some coatings have a high loading of fine zinc particles to provide cathodic protection to steel surfaces. They convert anodic areas on the steel to cathodic areas. The zinc particles must be in electrical contact with each other and with the steel to provide this protection. The two basic types is organic zinc rich coatings and in-organic zinc.

"A film of inorganic zinc silicate coating is unique because the film is relatively porous. Initially, the coating protects steel by cathodic protection, but its corrosion products gradually fill the porosity, so that it becomes a barrier coating. This means, once this barrier coat become scratched to expose the steel substrate, cathodic protection will begin again until the damage is healed. An inorganic zinc silicate coating is also unique in that it reacts with the steel to form a chemical bond."

Regardless of the mechanism(s) of protection imparted by coatings, a multiple coat system is normally recommended for maximum protection of metals.
The primer is formulated to bond well to the substrate and provide a good surface for adhesion of additional coats. Zinc or inhibitive primer pigments can provide corrosion control, as described above.
Intermediate coats provide additional barrier protection and unite the primer and finish coats. The finish coat provides additional barrier protection as well as resistance to weathering, and color, texture, and gloss.

By the way, coating has not only for protecting of structure, but there is other purposes, just name it :
- Cosmetic Appearance, somehow; it can rise moral and productivy of people who has activity somewhere around, if we could choose compatible color
- Marking Paint, other than for rapid identification of building, the main purpose of marking is to provide safety for personnel and equipment. You can imagine the disaster will be happened if there is no marking line on airfield runway or street.
- Safety Colors and Designs. Safety colors and designs are used on military installations for rapid identification of hazards or safety equipment. There is a rule/regulation for safety which is base in color used (
- Reflective finishes on concrete floors of hangars and shops may increase the lighting for
workmen, particularly in sheltered areas
- Nonskid Surfaces. Nonskid surfaces are frequently made by adding grit to coatings on floors, ramps, and other walking surfaces to provide slip resistance
- Antifouling Coatings. Antifouling coatings prevent the attachment and growth of marine fouling organisms by the controlled release of toxic materials. Regarding the content of toxic material (mainly lead-base material), which is arise health, safety and environment issue, many goverment and holder of authority for corrosion control has significant work-out for limitating and subtituting this material.[yirf]

Protective Coatings and Paints -02 Design Consideration

In the very first construction phase while the facilities still in conceptual design, we should keep in mind to considering corrosion affected by design. Although functional, safety, contructable and regulation requirement which the lead of design matter, we should put corrosion factor as well as previous consideration. Poor design of structures may accelerate deterioration or interfere with protection by coatings.

There are some examples of poor designs are listed below:
a) Water traps
Since water greatly accelerates deterioration, structures should be designed so that water is not collected. For example, angle irons and other configurations that can collect water should be oriented downward rather than upward. Weep holes of sufficient size should be placed where water collection cannot be otherwise avoided. Condensate water from air conditioners should not be allowed to run or drip on surfaces and steam or other vapors should not be allowed to impinge on surfaces.

b) Crevices
Crevices should be avoided in structures, because these oxygen-deficient areas accelerate metal corrosion. Thus, continuous welds should be used rather than skip welds. Back-to-back angles should also be avoided for this reason.

c) Rough and sharp surfaces
To obtain protection of a surface, a painter must be able to apply a uniformly thick, continuous film. Thus, irregular surfaces such as welds and other projections should be ground smooth to eliminate projections through the paint film. Weld-spatter, which is loosely-bonded to the steel, must be removed for two reasons. First, it creates crevices which lead to crevice corrosion and, second, as the mill scale becomes disbonded, the barrier film will be broken.
Sharp edges should be rounded (1/8 inch or more radius is ideal) because a uniformly thick coating cannot be applied over the edge. This is because wet coatings draw thin on them. Sharp interior corners should be avoided, since they may receive an excessive coating thickness.


d) Limited access
Areas to be protected should be readily accessible for inspection and maintenance. Difficultto-reach areas are not only difficult to prepare and coat, but reaching them may also constitute a safety hazard.

e) Incompatible environment
Materials must be compatible with the environment in which they are located. Thus, aluminum should not come into direct contact with concrete, because the alkalinity of the concrete will attack the aluminum.

f) Contact of dissimilar metals
Dissimilar metals probably present the biggest design problem. Because they have different corrosion potentials, they may corrode rapidly when in contact with each other. Examples of dissimilar metal (galvanic)
corrosion are:
* Steel pipe passing through an aluminum deck
* Steel nut on a copper valve
* Aluminum stanchion with a bronze lifelined) Aluminum plate with steel or different alloy aluminum rivets
* Mild steel attached to stainless steel Dissimilar surface conditions (e.g., threads, scratches, etc.) may also cause galvanic corrosion.

Protective Coatings and Paints -01 Introduction

INTRODUCTION
The main purpose of painting on facilities is to protect them from deterioration. These structures comprise a vital resource in the integrity, safety and continuous production of facilities. They must be kept in a state of operational readiness by efficient use of the limited funds available for this purpose. Unfortunately, these facilities are frequently subject to environments and uses that accelerate their natural deterioration and require costly repairs and maintenance.
Metals corrode in aggressive soil, industrial or chemical atmospheres, or immersion environments; woods swell, warp, and crack during weathering; concrete and masonry structures crack and spall in severe environments; and organic polymeric materials suffer degradation in sunlight. To adequately meet the challenges of protecting constructed facilities, it is necessary to have a general understanding of the common ways in which materials deteriorate and make it able to control.


TYPE of MATERIAL DETERIORATION
Deterioration of Metal :
Commonly name as Corrosion. Metals corrode because they exist in chemically unstable states. Thus, iron ore is a corrosion product in its natural, stable state. Energy must be used in blast furnaces to reduce iron to its metallic state. Iron and steel products are then slowly oxidized by corrosion to their previous stable lower energy states. at least four conditions must be present for corrosion to occur:
a) Anodic areas where corrosion occurs
b) Cathodic areas where the metal is protected
c) An electrolyte (conductive medium such as soil or water)
d) A metallic path between the anode and cathode
In atmospheric corrosion, surface moisture and contamination serve as the electrolyte. Dissimilar metals are
anodic and cathodic to each other; also, the same metal components have anodic and cathodic areas because of slight chemical or physical differences.

Deterioration of Wood

The lead causes of deterioration of wood are effects of ultraviolet light, and swelling and contracting. These adversely affect the physical properties of the wood.

Deterioration of Concrete

The main cause of concrete deterioration is moisture and electrolyte penetration. This may result in deterioration of the concrete itself or in corrosion of reinforcing steel which causes spalling of the concrete.

Stress at Work

The amount of time lost from work in Indonesia are not yet good recorded. In fact, there are lack of information regarding this manner. If we could assume that data from the United Kingdom working environment as reference, the total day lost are almost excess 300 million days perannum. At least 10 per cent of these days lost are attributed to what is officially referred to as ‘psychoneurosis’. To this figure of 30 million working days lost through psychoneurosis must be added further time lost through ‘psychosomatic’ complaints, namely physical illnesses that originated in, or have been exacerbated by, psychological and stress-related problems, and all uncertified absence.
Such losses represent a significant cost to all forms of organisation, and do not include the cost of low productivity and decreased efficiency due to low motivation, increases in alcohol and drug consumption, and time lost through ‘presenteeism’ ie being physically present at work, but mentally absent.

WHAT IS STRESS?
Stress is a term that is rarely clearly understood.
Generally, a stressful circumstance is one with which an individual is unable to cope successfully, or believes he cannot cope successfully, and which results in unwanted physical, mental or emotional responses. Stress implies some form of demand on the individual, it can be perceived as a threat, it can produce the classic ‘flight or fight’ response, it may create physiological
imbalance and can certainly affect individual performance. It is particularly concerned with how people cope with changes in their lives at work, at home and in other circumstances. It should be appreciated, however, that not all stress is bad. We all need a certain amount of stress (positive stress) in order to cope with life situations on an ongoing basis.

STRESSOR
A stressor produces stress. There are many forms of stressor, namely:
1. Physical stressors – extremes of temperature, lighting, ventilation and humidity, noise and vibration.
2. Chemical stressors – dangerous chemicals: gases, vapours, dusts, etc.
3. Biological stressors – bacteria, viruses, etc.
4. Social or psychological stressor.

Most people associate stress with social or psychological stress which may be brought about, perhaps, by isolation, rejection, pressure and a general overloading of the body systems (distress). The demands on people at work vary substantially. Some demands may be related to the actual work that they do or the factors surrounding that work, including:
(a) psychological demands – machine-paced work, the quality of supervision, hazards, monotony of the task;
(b) physical demands – the effort required, as in manual handling activities, the potential for fatigue and exposure to hazardous substances;
(c) demands related to the construction of displays and controls on machinery – display screen equipment, fork-lift trucks, machinery;
(d) environmental demands – noise, pollution, poor lighting, etc;
(e) working hours – shift work, unsocial hours, night work, the frequency of breaks; and
(f) payment arrangements – piecework systems, compliance with quality standards.

So beware with your stress.

Liburan Ciater-T.Perahu

Ditengah kesibukan bekerja, aku sempat juga untuk mengunjungi tempat-tempat ini. Kemewahan yang luar biasa bagi aku yang hampir bergelut dengan dead-line..

Ciater dan Tangkuban Perahu. Bagiku, familiar banget. Bukan untuk pertama kalinya ke lokasi tersebut. Namun, kesan yang aku dapat pasti berbeda pada setiap kunjungan.


Sekedar berbagi tips.
1. Untuk masuk ke lokasi Tangkuban Perahu, sebenarnya di pintu masuk sudah tertera harga tiket dan sebagainya. Namun harap diinget, angka yang tertera di situ bukannya tidak bisa ditawar. Kebetulan penjaga pintu masuknya orang sunda, jika ada yang bisa berbahasa Sunda, sedikit ngegombal pasti dapat diskon. untuk kasus ku kemarin 1mobil + 7 person = 70 ribu




2. Untuk ke Ciater, proses masuk agak ketat, seperti ke gedung bioskop. 1 tiket 1 orang. Jangan berharap dapat diskon. Kalau melihat pengelolaan tempat wisata ini, kita membayar lebih aku pikir sudah sesuai dengan fasilitas yang ada.

3. Ciater, mohon berhati-hati dengan tikar yang banyak digelar di dekat sungai2 air panas. Itu tidak gratis. Ada sekelompok pemuda yang akan mendatangi Anda jika anda memilih duduk di tikar tersebut. Sewa tikar, begitu kira-kira. Sungguh pemandangan ini jadi kontras dengan anjuran pihak pengelola untuk tidak menggelar tikar, maklum, kasihan rumputnya.

3. Kalau berendam di Ciater, jangan lupa bawa banyak air putih, kalau tidak mau dehidrasi.

4. Flying Fox di Ciater, patut dicoba. Modal 15rb, sudah bisa teriak-teriak memacu produksi adrenalin

5. Selalu saya ingatkan untuk membawa bekal makanan sendiri, untuk menekan ongkos liburan. Yah..namanya tempat wisata, makanannya juga mahal. Tapi kalo budget ada sih..no problem lah

Sokka, Suki, and Toph berjuang menghentikan armada udara the Fire Nation. Sementara itu, Zuko dan Azula bertarung di Agni Kai and Aang menghadapi the Fire Lord. Saat diambang kekalahan, punggung Aang (bekas luka pada episode sebelumnya) terkena serangan, yang akhirnya membuat dirinya berubah menjadi the Avatar State.

Aang mengalahkan the Fire Lord sekaligus menghapus kemampuan fire bending -nya. Zuko akhirnya terluka akibat melindungi Katara dari serangan Azula, Katara bertarung sendiri melawan Azula. Akhirnya Zuko dinobatkan sebagai Fire Lord dan berjanji akan menciptakan masa depan yang lebih baik untuk dunia. Aang ditahbiskan sebagai Avatar. Katara akhirnya menunjukkan cintanya kepada Aang.

Naval'ers -1

Kemarin, seperti yang telah direncanakan sebelumnya, aku berjumpa dengan prend2 naval'ers di Jakarta. Kali ini lokasinya di Arkadia Simatupang. Aku tidak pernah menyangka kalau naval'ers ada juga yang kerja di kawasan jakarta selatan, umumnya di tj.priok dan sekitarnya.

Cecep (P-36) dan H.U.J.U (P-35), kantornya berada di kawasan perkantoran hijau ini. Aku ada jadwal meeting dengan bos BP, sekalian saja ketemuan dengan mereka di tempat tersebut. Biasanya sih ada Giri (P-36) yang jadi klien BP untuk pekerjaan strukturnya, jadinya juga sering meeting di kawasan ini. Tapi kemarin...sori gir..ora t'ajak..

"Piye kabarmu jhe?",
"Anakmu wes piro?"
"Wingi ono acara mangan2 ko ora teko"
"Jangk***, Jan**k....

Bener-bener aku kangen dengan suasana ini. Ngobrol ngalor-ngidul, ngopi, cangkrukan ala ITS plus tanya jawab update terakhir Naval'ers yang lain, terutama di Jakarta. Syukurlah, sebagian besar masih bisa dikontak dan meluangkan waktu untuk berjumpa, meski aku yakin kesibukan mereka di atas rata-rata apa lagi yang sudah berkeluarga. Duh repotnya..

Satu yang aku harapkan, kalau ganti no HP, mbok ya announce...

KOROSI-Bagaimana Terjadinya?

"Daya Pemicu yang menyebabkan logam rusak akibat karat merupakan konsekuensi alami sebuah ke-sementara-an keadaan dari logam pada bentuk metalik-nya"

Untuk memahami kenapa logam bisa korosi, pertama harus diketahui bagaimana sebuah logam dapat terbentuk. Dengan metode yang sederhana, zat metallic dapat terbentuk dengan dua bahan pokok, yaitu bijih logam alam dan penambahan energi dalam bentuk panas atau tekanan.Penambahan energi ini memaksa bijih logam alam berubah menjadi zat metallic. Dengan kata lain, logam adalah bijih alam dan penambahan energi.

BIJIH LOGAM ALAM + ENERGI => ZAT METALLIK (proses peleburan logam)

Proses ini merupakan reaksi bolak balik, artinya

ZAT METALLIK => BIJIH LOGAM ALAM + ENERGI (proses korosi)

Sesaat setelah sebuah zat metal tercipta, maka dimulailah proses pelepasan energi pembentuknya. Proses ini biasa kita sebut sebagai KOROSI.
